If you’re into theatrical, colourful music, you’re bound to have heard of the Fazz band. Since we last caught up, singer-songwriter Kevin Vong, once part of Fazz, has ventured on and founded The Kevin Michael Project, a collaborative musical project of the vaudeville-swing genre. The bad news is, the project is founded and based in Singapore. But before you hurl rocks at me for giving you false hopes (so close yet so far… and expensive *cough*), I have good news, too – The Kevin Michael Project is coming to local shores!
The project consists of Kevin himself, and Singaporean musicians, Ben Jacob Lee, Benjamin Mah and Raf Soundwalker. The quartet will be in Kuala Lumpur and Penang for a series of workshop performances. What’s more, at the shows, the band will be engaging with the audience to get feedback to help the project grow. In other words, after attending the shows, you can go around boasting, “Eh bro, I collab with The Kevin Michael Project before you know ah? Yeah, I helped in producing their songs weih. Geng, right?!” So yes, drop everything (while being very careful not to spill that hot cup of coffee on your friend) and head to the show for boasting rights because who doesn’t want that, am I right?
At the end of the day, The Kevin Michael Project hopes to be able to showcase all completed songs, improvised through feedbacks from the public, in an actual ticketed event. But that’s a story for another day. In the mean time, let’s check out some of the project’s songs!
1) Sound of the Sea
With its descriptive and beautiful storytelling lyrics, and Kevin’s vocals full of emotions, you can easily visualize the song in an almost Disneyesque setting. One part of the song, with the distant sound of waves and a thunderstorm, is soothingly calming, and the other part, with its catchy swinging beats, make you want to sway your body along. Put two and two together and you get a song that gets your feet tapping, but is not too upbeat for when you need some mellow tunes.
2) Dance With Me
“Would you dance with me?” Why, yes, please! If the song doesn’t make you want to finally get up from your desk and happily swing and leap around the room, then I don’t know what will. Okay fine, maybe EDM is more your cup of shots tea. But that aside, unlike “Sound of the Sea”, the scenario in “Dance With Me” is very familiar – something that everyone can easily relate to and have experienced before. You can’t help but cheer on the socially awkward guy. Give this guy a cookie for his efforts! And boy, I sure hope they see each other again…
3) Daddy Once Said
“Daddy Once Said” has a more jazzy vibe going, and is also a lot catchier. You might not agree with me about the previous two songs making you want to get on your feet, but you HAVE to agree with me on this one! With the moving bass and rhythmic melodic line, even the most stoic person would be caught bopping their head along. So if you wanna get someone’s groove on, you know what song to play.
